what would make the rear door not open? What could I check or find a picture of the mechanism?

Finding a manual on line for that new a van might be hard, but at the public library, in the refference section, you can read the shop manuals, as well as the generic manuals, and make copies as needed.

Disconnected lever link, or a stuck door lock would be my guess.
