Chevrolet Repair: AC Chevy Tahoe 1995, chevy tahoe, dash vents

Question
My AC system (1995 Tahoe)lost the refrigerant after it was charged. My mechanic located (with sniffer) the leak.  He inserted the sniffer in the dash vents after checking the fittings in the engine compartment.  There were no leaks in engine compartment but leaking refrigerant was detected from the air vents. The cost he quoted $1000 was mainly labor to take the dash apart.  Is it wise to take this job on myself?  I would replace the leaking evaporator, cost $150, and then have the system charged by pro. Is this a good idea or am I asking for trouble?

Answer
Honestly your asking for trouble. I'm not saying you can't do it but without proper training your leaving room for a costly mistake. I only say that because I have no training but experience and I tried to replace the evaporator on my 1992 and ended up not putting something together right. It cost me about 1500 to get it fixed.
