Chevrolet Repair: 94 cavalier, obd ii, dash light

Question
I have a check engine light that come on when engine gets warm and when you turn the engine off it sound like its winding down(I don't know any other way to explain it) the car drives ok. When you turn the engine back on the check engine light stays off for another 8 to 12 miles

Answer
Hi Bob,

Sounds like a problem when in closed loop.  Could be a sensor that is misinforming the computer, and the computer has decided to ignore it.  Pull your codes.  I am not positive if this is OBD-II or not.  If not, you can use the connector under the dash, and count the flashing light on the dash.  You may find the O2, or some other sensor that is not critical for the motor to run.  If OBD-II, you need a scan tool.

The winding noise could be a dragging starter.  It is not disengaging from the flywheel.  This could be a misaligned starter, or a bad return spring on the starter gear.  This could cause a dash light to come on, if OBD-II
