Chevrolet Repair: EGR valve issues, auto parts store, bad cat

Question
My daughter has a 2001 Impala.  Recently she began experiencing drivability issues she described as very poor acceleration, inability to go faster than 30 mph, etc.  She took it to an auto parts store and put it on a code reader.  They told her she had an EGR valve problem and this was common.  Rather than sell her an EGR valve they suggested she have someone remove it and soak it in carb cleaner, clean it up gently, and then reinstall?  Is this a good idea?  Can the EGR valve be removed disconnecting the peice that goes into the manifold?  Thank you.

Answer
Hi Jeff, This doesn't sound like a egr problem to me, more like a restricted exhaust or plugged fuel filter. The egr can't stop the car from over 30 mph. Also if the exhaust is restricted (BAD CAT CON) this can cause a egr code because of the back pressure. I would take the car in to have a shop or dealer have a look at it. Cat cons  are not cheap, around $600 plus labor.

Hope this helps you
