Chevrolet Repair: timing chain, crankshaft pulley, crankshaft rotation

Question
have a 97 silverado, wont start, put new fuel pump in 8 mos. ago,new relay, changed plugs, relay got so hot burned to touch, finally died (truck)put another relay in wont start, would the wires from tank to relay be cause of this?oh by the way is there a way i can check to see if timing chain is gone (broke-slipping)without taking motor apart to see if it is or not tyvm for your time

Answer
To check the timing chain,
Remove the distributor cap, and while watching the rotor, move the crankshaft pulley clockwise, and then counterclockwise. The rotor should turn in opposite directions immediately.
You can also watch the camshaft, or a valve rocker arm through the oil fill hole when there is no distributor. The rocker arm you can see, once it starts to move, should also reverse direction immediately after reversing direction of crankshaft rotation.

That will only tell you if there is excessive slack in the timing gears, or if the chain is broken.

If the wires to the fuel pump are shorted, like squeezed between the tank support bracket and the frame, it could cause the heat. That can happen if the tank was dropped to replace the pump, and then the wirec pinched during reinstalling it.
Or, if the pump is locked up, it could cause the relay to get hot.
