Chevrolet Repair: transmisson problems 1993 Suburban, chevy k1500, torque converter

Question
I have a 1993 Chevy K1500 Suburban 5.7L and we are having shifting problems after about 20mph it revs up but won't down shift until after you past the 40mph mark. Some said that we needed to have the solenoid replaced and have the transmission flushed and filters changes. Others say we need a new or rebuilt transmission. What is your suggestion? And if its a new transmission should it be rebuilt or new? One mechanic said that it would be 2000 for a new one and 3000 for a rebuilt one is there some where we can order one and have someone put it in for us?

Answer
Hi Christina,

I had a Camaro that did this.  I needed a rebuild.  The second gear was toast.  You have the same transmission.  I don't know if a solenoid will fix the problem.  I paid $1300 for the rebuild, with a shift kit and new torque converter.

You can try ebay.  Cherry automotive in Ohio get many parts and ships.  Junk yards should have this for a few hundred.  With 4x4, it may cost $600 to swap it out.  I did the removal and installation on my Camaro.

Try the phone book and call many shops.  You will get many different estimates.  Use them against eachother to negotiate.

Good luck.
