Chevrolet Repair: heat gauge-1979 pickup-305-factory., rubber hoses, heat sensor

Question
after we changed the waterneck and valve cover gaskets, we  noticed the heat gauge not working. must be a wire...but where? on top of waterneck is something that reminds me of a heat sensor but all that comes off of it is 4 little rubber hoses. i can't locate a loose wire.

Answer
Hi Jeff Loveland,

Look for a green wire, loose and knocked aside.  It should go into a brass temperature switch with a tiny bolt and screw on top.  This is usually in the goose neck (waterneck) or on the front of the intake manifold, dead center and screw pointing up.  Could also be in the head end.  Possibly in the back of the head, near the firewall.  Probably broke it off when doing the valve covers, or the gooseneck (waterneck).

Did the old gooseneck have a fitting and sensor that the new one doesn't have?

Good luck!  You'll find it.  Usually green.
