Chevrolet Repair: starter removal on 94 blazer 4wd, strut bars, starter removal

Question
QUESTION: my starter just went in a burger king parking lot!! how do i remove it,can i remove it without jacking it up,i have no AAA so it have to repair it there.please help
ANSWER: Hi Gary,

Been there!  I hate it when that happens.  As far as if you need to raise the truck, that depends on your ability to fit in the area.  I would have to lift it up a little.

As far as the starter, you will contend with the exhaust in the way.  It will fit out with out too much trouble, once you find the pathway.  You may have to twist and turn the starter to get it out.  Just remember how, so you can get it back in.  Hopefully the wires are easy to get to.  If you disconnect these first, it will be easier to fanangle the starter around.

You have two bolts, shoud go up from the bottom up.  This is not too hard to do.  Figure 1/2 hour.

Sometimes if you hit the starter hard, a few times, it will give you one more start.  Try hitting while someone else is turning the key.

Do you get a 'chink' down at the flywheel, but no turn of the motor?  If so, try hitting hard with a hammer, rock, golf club, anything heavy you can find and swing.  Can't hurt.

If you get nothing when you turn the key, it may be a connection.

Good luck.

Answer
Hi again Gary,

You can remove those transmission support strut bars with no effect.  If it is in the way, definately move it.  Some cars have these and some don't.  That is why I didn't meantion it last time.

You can also slightly move some things underneith with a pry bar.  If you need a 1/4", maybe the exhaust can be moved over this much with a pry bar.

Sounds like you are almost there.
