Chevrolet Repair: electrical noise on radio?, windshield wipers, antenna connection

Question
I am sure the antenna on the VHF radio (a handheld walkie talkie type radio) is not an issue. I've checked the stereo antenna, it's OK.

-----Question-----
2002 Chev. S-10 Blazer, 102K miles, 4.3l engine. I get a noise on a VHF radio (I'm a vol. firefighter) that sounds like interference on the AM radio of a 1960's car with a bad condensor. The interference changes pitch with engine speed. It is also audible on the AM radio when listening to a distant station. When windshield wipers cycle on delay setting, I sometimes pick up the noise.
Is this indicating need to replace plug wires, or something else in the ignition system, or maybe some other system?
No other issues with the performance of the engine.
thanks

A loose or poor radio antenna connection could also contribute to that noise.

Answer
OK Harold, I was assuming you were talking about the truck radio.

I carry a handheld radio all the time. Many late model vehicles will cause interference on one channel or another. it is the same type of interference that drives the radio nuts when it is within a few feet of many store cash registers, and internet LAN hubs and routers, along with many other computerized items.
In a Chevy pickup, if you get it near the dash, it breaks squelch.
In my F150, just laying on the seat will do it.\

And it won't necessarily do it on all channels.

Tightening the squelch on the handheld can minimize it, but often can't blank it out.

An exterior antenna attached to the radio, and stuck out the window will often work.
