Chevrolet Repair: gasleak, plastic tank, tank bottom

Question
I have a 1994 3.4 Camaro and i have a question i had just recently fill the tank up and i drove no more then 5 mile before the car ran out of gas.So i put 10 dollars worth of gas in it to see what was happening. And i look under the car and seen my gas leaking out real bad.So is my gasline busted or could it be something else?

Answer
Hi Malcolm,

The fact that you were able to drive 5 miles, I don't think your gas line is busted.  Possible crack or split, but that would not cause a profuse leak if you are not running (as you described in the second sceanario).

Was the gas pouring from the area where the gas tank is mounted?  I am assuming it was, and will say you probably punctured your tank, or it rusted a hole.  Since you ran completely out of gas, the problem is at the tank bottom.

If the car was running when the gas was "leaking out real bad", you could suspect a fuel line.  That would be more of a high pressure spraying out.

If you have a plastic tank, I don't know of any fixes.  If your tank is metal, you could weld it (carefully).  Have someone who knows what they are doing, perform this proceedure.  The best fix in either case is replacement.

Hope this helps.
