Chevrolet Repair: Fuel System Problems, chevy truck, cam lobe

Question
I just replaced the fuel pump and filter in my 83 Chevy truck and now it is not getting fuel.  I primed the carb and the truck starts and run for a time, but isn’t drawing fuel from the tanks.  The truck has a 454 with duel tanks, and yes both tanks have fuel in them.  What could be causing this problem?  Any help will be gratefully appreciated.

Answer
Hi Rusty,

I am sure you have this solved by now, but I am new and am answering questions from the 'Pool of unanswered questions'.

Three things come to mind:

One:  did you make sure the fuel pump actuator is hitting the cam lobe?  Pull the fuel line from the carb and put it in a can.  See if cranking the engine will fill the can.  If so, you are getting supply.

Second:  Is the fuel line kinked?

Third:  Is the filter installed backward?  If so, fuel won't enter the filter.  It will dead-head against it.

Hope this helps.
