Chevrolet Repair: 2000 Cavalier, atlanta motor speedway, vacuum line

Question
Ok, found some more info. I got to drive the car. There IS an SES light on. Also, the car will kick down at highway speeds with no slipping. It is only when it kicks down to first (under 30 mph, perhaps) that it slips noticeably.
Is this common with the cavalier?
Thanks for the help!

-----Question-----
A friend has a 2000 Cavalier with (I think) a 2.2 liter and automatic. When you try to kick the transmission down for passing power at any speed, the transmission just slips away. The rpm increases but the car actually slows down. Under gentle driving, no trouble. From a dead stop and then full throttle, there is no power, but instead this rpm increase with no speed increase. The car has 160,000 miles on it, and the trans fluid looks and smells fine, not burnt. Is the trans toast? Vacuum line or sensor problem? No SES light on.

thanks for any help
-----Answer-----
Slipping clutches internally.

Answer
I know that Cadillac has about the same transmissions (cimmaron) and they have a problem with slipping.
I would suggest changing the filter and fluid before taking it to a transmission shop.
Sorry it took so long to answer, went to the Atlanta Motor Speedway to watch the Bass Pro Shop 500 Nascar race.
