Chevrolet Repair: engine problems, crankshaft damper pulley, 2000 chevy prizm

Question
I have a 2000 chevy prizm, when I go to start it all I hear is  the starter running open, nothing else happens, do you know what could be wrong with it?

Answer
Hi Rachel.
If it has previously made bad noises while starting, I would say a section of the flywheel teeth are missing. But it could be just a part of the starter broke. I would probably rotate the engine over some way by hand first, just to see if it is the teeth thing. Use the belt or crankshaft damper pulley.

Next I would remove the starter and check it.
