Hi. I'm in a bind. I went to start my Astro Van, after just turning it off one hour ago, and it didn't turn over. So I thought maybe my battery terminals were corroded and i clean them, nothing. Then I hooked up a battery charger and charged it,nothing. I had the alternator checked and that was good. Finally I find out it was my stater & solenoid were bad. I replaced both and still nothing. I'm getting power to the starter, but the small wire to the solenoid is getting no power when i turn the key. Does this sound like I need a Neutral Safety Switch or maybe even an ignition switch. It will not start in neutral either.

Answer -
Neutral safety switch is a possibility. Lets start out with diagnosing.
Do your instrument panel gauges operate when the key is on and you know the battery is charged?

Answer-
Before the van did not start, the tempature gauge didn't register for about three days & the check engine light came on anytime i excelled over 60 miles an hour (but, i don't think that has anything to do with this problem. It's been doing that for about 6 weeks. I'm getting a Diagnostics test at AutoZone after i get it running again). Yes the battery is fully charged. Is the neutral safety switch an easy fix on this vehicle, for a back yard mechanic like myself? Will I need any special tools to use on the steering column or to remove the old one or to replace the new one?
Thanks for your quick response.

Answer
Your neutral safety switch is located on the side of the transmission. First, Try holding the shifter up in park and turn the key at the same time.
Second, I want you to check one wire in two different places. Check the small wire going to the starter at the end where it connects to the starter. Then check the same wire above the fusible link that is in the wire, (looks like a place where the wire was joined together). Tell me the results.
If no power at one end, but power above the fusible link, replace the fusible link.
