Chevrolet Repair: timing, hi doug, timing light

Question
I have a 1989 k-2500 with a 5.7liter engine when the truck accelerates the engine pings. I put a timing light on it and the timing mark appears up at 12 o'clock and not on the timing indicator where it should be. I tried to move it but when I do the doesn't start up easily. the truck has approx. 139,000 miles on it I don't know all it's history due to that I'm the third owner, any sugestions would be helpful. thanks Doug

Answer
Hi Doug, I have seen this before and the only way to really time it is to road test it and adjust the timing until it stops pinging. I know this is not a easy way but what else can you do. Just leave the dist loose enough so you can turn it when you stop to adjust it.
