Chevrolet Repair: 1995 geo metro, brake warning light, geo metro

the brake warning light came on in my 1995 geo metro . is there anything i should check to take care of it before i take it to the shop? What will trigger that light? i would rather take care of it myself than pay a mechanic.

A leak in the brake system will trigger the light ( if the master cylinder gets low on fluid ) check the fluid level 1st , there is a sensor in the master to detect low fluid . Also make sure the emergency brake is fully releasing, if a e-brake cable hangs up this can also cause the light to stay on
