Chevrolet Repair: transfer case, snap ring, transfer case

Question
i have a 96 chevy z71 , it is making a  whinning/grinding noise . when i drive in 2 hi its noisie, in 4 hi it gets louder and in 4 low it gets horrably loud, but the tranny seems to beworking fine and i have no leaks in the driveline. one min it was fine and the next some think is grinding.                     It is push button 4wheeldrive and i wanted to know if there is anything that can come loose or electronicly go out to make that noise?

Answer
Hi Dan,

UPDATE TO PREVIOUS ANSWER.....

There is a snap ring in the tailshaft that can come out, and that will cause some grindy type noise.
There is also a retrofit sleeve to repair the problem.

other possibilities are the chain in the transfer case, and of course, other problems in the transfer case.

Go to the following site, to the Tahoe section, and look for a thread about this same problem. Saw it just a few days ago, including pictures.

Or go directly to the thread at the following.
