Chevrolet Repair: A/C 97 CHEVY SUBURBAN, resistor pack, chevy suburban

Question
Hi,
The a/c fan dial on the dash of my Suburban has stopped working. The rear A/C and fans work, and cold air can be felt in the front floorboard at times. The switch seemed to slowly go bad - I used to be able to fiddle with the fan dial and get it to kick on. Now it has stopped altogether. How hard is it to replace, and is the dial the problem?
Thanks!
~A

Answer
Hi A,
I would bet it's the switch, but without more info, hard to be sure.

Does the fan do absolutely nothing in other positions?

There is a resistor pack that is used for the different speeds, but no resistors are used when in high speed, so if high speed also doesn't work, I would lean towards thinking it is the switch.
I would check fuses first though.

And does the switch feel loose, or easier to turn than when it is working?

I haven't replaced that exact switch, but it is something you can do yourself, I am sure.

If you would like to read up on the proceedure for testing it, as well as replacing it, go to the public library, in the refference section, and find the shop manual for that vehicle, and make some copies of the pages that help.
