I have an 83 camaro Z28 with a vortec 350 engine model 1992,it start smoking too much, when I made an oil change by mistake I used a very thin consitence oil,I have changed it by a better oil and it still smoking,I also saw an oil stain in the exahust near to the connection between the headers and the exhaust pipe,if there is a major problem with the engine its there any oil treatment to use that can help to prevent all that smoke,by the way, there is not any noise in the engine and when I made the last oil change it was clean, not any signal of metal on it,also the smoke color is between white and gray, not black,I have a edelbrook carburator on it,the spark plugs are new and the spark plug wires also, please let me know the possible problems and solutions for this,

Thanks in advance

Another thought, Edgar.
That engine probably has a carburetor, rather than fuel injection.
You mentioned the oil was thin. If you have a mechanical fuel pump, and it is leaking into the crankcase, it can dilute the oil terribly, which will allow it to get by the rings, and smoke like that.

Hi Van,

Actually my car have an electric fuel pump,I was not using this car since I change the thin oil on last week for new oil,and yesterday I used my car and it looks that is smoking less, does this means that the engine does not have a mechanic problem?and my last question is ,how long can take to my car to get read of the oil that is by the rings?

Regards,

Edgar

Answer
Hello Edgar,
If a big slug of oil got into the exhaust system, it could take hours for it to all burn away, assuming no more gets in there.
Just for sure make sure the engine is filled to the correct level, and make sure it isn't diluted with gas.
I really don't know if your rings are involved. Even real thin oil, say 5W20, shouldn't pass by the rings too bad.

You didn't say if the smoke is from INSIDE the exhaust, or if it is just coming from under the hood.
