Chevrolet Repair: Tilt steering column on 1985 El Camino, steering column, hinge

The entire steering column feels loose.  It steers okay, but there's play in the whole column.  What do you think may be the cause?  Is the vehicle safe to drive?  What is the fix?

Hello Barb,
If you mean you turn it a lot before anything happens, check the tierod ends, and check the bolts that mount the steering gear to the frame. Make sure it isn't coming unbolted.

If it seems to be loose in the tilt hinge area...a lot of movement up and down...check this link.
