Chevrolet Repair: 1988 Chevy s-10, oil pressure switch, shift linkage

Question
I have a 1988 S-10-4x4 with a 2.8 V-6 in need of replacement. Is it possible to replace the fuel injected 6 cylinder with a carberated V-8 and if so what will I need?

Thank-you

Answer
Hello Rick,
Is it possible?
I'd have to say yes.

If you live somewhere with emissions inspections, you may want to check with someone in that state to see what would be required or allowed along that line.

It's gonna take a lot of work, but in my little mind, I can see that being easier than installing a fuel injected engine in a previously carbed truck.

You will need to modify the fuel pump control a little, but you can run it with an oil pressure switch so it quits pumping when the engine dies, like after a wreck, so you don't pump the full tank of gas out. A push button to run the pump till the oil pressure builds up would work just great.
The pressure from the in tank pump....13PSI, really wouldn't be too high for the carb, but it would be nice to have a pressure regulator in the system, so you can return some fuel to the tank, allowing the fuel to circulate, rather than dead-heading the pump.

You are going to have a check engine light on all the time because of the sensor connectors that will be unused. Of course you won't be using the ECM, so removing it could disable the light also.

If it is a CCC engine, computer controlled carburation, you will need to bring a bunch of that stuff with the engine. But if you are going older than that, I can see it being quite easy.

Obviously there will be some motormount, driveshaft, shift linkage, and possibly frame and crossmember work required, as well as complete exhaust.

Gonna keep it 4X4? Check the oil pan area for clearance.
Front driveshaft on the same side?

Have some fun with it.
