Chevrolet Repair: 97 4.3L Blazer WILL NOT START, chev blazer, chain and sprockets

Question
First the details:
1997 Chev Blazer 162k miles.
Timing chain and sprockets replaced at 110-115k miles, fuel filter replaced 2/19/06, spark plugs & wires 149k miles

I was driving down the highway 60-62mph and all of the sudden no acceleration. I looked down at the gauges – oil, temp & battery gauges were all normal. So I checked the rearview to pull over onto the shoulder. When I looked back down check engine and battery lights were on. Car wouldn't fire when I got to the side of the road. Towed it home and worked on it.

Now here is the problem. fuel pressure at the Schraeder valve is good. I have spark from coil to distributor and distributor to plug. So baffled that the needed elements were there, I sprayed some gas in the throttle body and nothing, it didn't even begin to fire.

It does not spin freely as a broken or jumped timing chain normally does b/c of lack of compression.

Any ideas would be appreciated. I've exhausted my knowledge and now need ideas or possibilities.

Answer
Hi Paul, Well you might have me baffled too! The only thing that I can think of that I have seen only a few times is the dist cap or rotor is bad. I know,  there is spark at the plugs. If you check for spark and there is another ground path you might see it at both spots. If you look at the top of the dist cap you will see the high rounded paths where the spark travels to the plug wires. Locate the plug wire path that goes right next to and around the coil post in the middle of the cap. Disconnect this wire from the cap and try to start the engine. If it now runs on 5 cylinders your cap is bad.

You could just replace the cap and rotor and see if it runs too. Be sure that you have a good hot spark...should jump a 1 inch gap!

Hope this helps you

Have a Great Day
