Chevrolet Repair: Truck Bogging Down, throttle linkage, lean mixture

Question
Hey Van

Ive already tried the suggestion you gave me about taking off my gas cap when my truck was bogging down. THat did not really seem to help. Do you know anything else that would fix my problem. Thanks for getting back to me so soon.

Answer
Hi Nic,
You have a carburetor.
If it bogs when you lightly or moderately press the gas, even to the floor, but seems to operate better if you tromp it hard, I would say it is the accelerator pump in the carb.
When the throttle plate opens, a large amount of air enters the engine, and there is a plunger in the carb to mechanically spray an equally large amount of gas in with it. If the gas is not pumped in there, it will be a very lean mixture till the vacuum has a chance to suck the gas in, and it will fall on its face.
Remove the air filter, and with the engine off, look down in the carb throat, and operate the throttle linkage to wide open.
If there isn't a good healthy spray of gas, then that is your problem. Takes a jiffy kit.

Why does it run better later?
Could be that it is in early stages of worn out, and as it heats up from engine temp, the plunger gets a little more flexable, and pumps better.
