Chevrolet Repair: 1989 Chevrolet Celebrity stalls and surges etc..., spark plug wires, chevrolet celebrity

Question
I have a 1989 Chevrolet Celebrity 2.8L with 135000kms I have always said it is the best car ive ever owned until this last week. I was returning from a short trip and pulled into a parking lot and out of the blue the car just stalled. I drove it home a short distance and it kept sputtering and would give the occasional surge once I stopped at a light The engine light flashed on and off briefly and once the car was parked at home the engine would give short little revving sounds. I had a friend look at it and he figured the spark plug wires needed replacing which I did to no avail. i have since puttered around in the car for about an hour period just driving it around the neighborhood and it stalled about 15 times with the same results all the time. It starts right back up again sometimes running fine and other times doing all the stuff listed above. The other thing it is doing along with all this other stuff is the speedometer and odometer just stop working sporadically. i asked at a couple of shops and they told me basically that there is no point hooking up the code reader unless the engine light is on...but it is never on unless the car is giving a little surge forward when im stopped. The car is usually running a bit rought amongst this all...like when I press the gas pedal it sometimes gives a little pause before it moves on.

if you can help with this it would be much appreciated as im at a loss as to what to do.

The alternator is approximatly 1 year old, fuel pump 3 years old, plug wires 3 days old. Was given an ol change less than two months ago.

Answer
Hi Grant, What you need is a new ECM (computer). Buy a new ECM and swap the prom from the old ECM to the new ECM. Install the ECM, now run the car to get it up to temp. Next put the car in drive with the parking brake on and let it run for 10 minutes. After that turn the key off for a minute, Start and run in drive for 5 minutes. This will relearn the idle setting in the ECM.
