Chevrolet Repair: Security Message Light / starting problem, chevy dealership, security light

Question
Mark:

Please help!

I have a 2001 Monte Carlo LS, 3.8L V6, the problem I am having is that three or four times a week while driving the security light comes on. The next couple of times I try to start the car, it won't start. The security light will flash three times then the battery light then the security light and so on.  I did some research and found the 'Ignition / Security Relaern Procedure'which consists of turning the key to 'on' for about 10 minutes until the 'Security' light alternates with the battery light instead of blinking three times. Although aggravating, this has always worked 1st time, until this past week. Now it takes two (2) or three(3) iterations to get the car to start. When this problem first surfaced, I took the car to the Chevy dealership where I purchaed the car...they were unable to recreate the problem and did nothing. I need a car that starts and want to take it in to be repaired, but after my last attempt I feel I better be able to help the service people with the diagnosis. Do you have any Ideas?

Thank you,

Robert

Answer
Hello Robert, This system is hard to say which componant is at fault. The most common part is the ignition lock. I have also seen problems with the connection at the ignition switch. The terminals get very loose and can cause the same thing but without a code in the security system. If there are codes then the problem would be the ignition lock cylinder part.

I also hope there isn't a add on remote start system on this car, these can cause problems too.

Hope this helps
