Chevrolet Repair: 97 Z-71, neutral safety switch, radio power

Question
Hi Van.  I was coming home a few minutes ago.  Stopped at the mailbox, turned off the truck, restared the truck, was driving down the block when I noticed electrical smoke coming from the steering column, under the dash and through the air vents.

Whipped in the driveway and turned off the truck and the smoke stopped.  Check all fuses, none popped.

With the key in the ON position, everything works, radio, power windows etc.  When I turn the key, everything nothing happens.

BAttery is unhooked now.  If I had to guess I would say ignition switch...  Any words of wisdom?

Answer
Hello Greg,

"With the key in the ON position, everything works, radio, power windows etc. When I turn the key, everything nothing happens. "   Do you mean when you turn the key to Start, nothing happens?

Do you happen to have a large wad of keys, and maybe they held the switch in the crank position?

Anyway, there is the chance of needing that switch, or the neutral safety switch, or it could be a wire shorted.
