Chevrolet Repair: Starter issues., chevy blazer, negative cable

Question
Well my problem is that I left my dome light on for almost an entire day which in turn drained my battery.

Well I tried to jump the engine but I would get no engine or starter noise.  It wasn't trying to turn over at all.

Well I went to replace and test the battery and when I installed it I got the same issue.  Everything internally was working fine, however the minute I went to turn the key over the radio lights dimmed out and It wouldn't turn over.

So I assume it's the starter.

Basically I would like to do the repairs myself but I can't even find the starter to get it tested and replaced.

So a somewhat detailed answer on where to locate my starter on a 1994 chevy blazer s-10 4x4 4.3 v6 would be helpful.

I also heard something about having to shim the starter.

Answer
Hello Sean,
First, your starter didn't sit there and go bad, just because your dome light was left on. If it was working good before, chances are good that the starter isn't the problem.

I think there is a good chance the battery cable connections are just dirty or loose. Check the end of the negative cable that bolts to the engine block also, to make sure it is clean and tight.

Did you have the battery tested with a load tester, or replace with a new battery? Need to make sure you are working with a good battery first.

If it turns out to be the starter, it is under the rear right side of the engine. Quite hard to get to actually. GM should be ashamed, but that's just the way it is. Be sure to unhook the battery before messing with the starter.

I would sure recommend getting someone with some experience with starting systems to check it on the truck before just going to all the trouble of removing it, to possibly have it check out fine.

As for the shims, they would be between the starter and the block, and if none come off with the starter, chances are, none will be needed. They are almost never needed, unless the starter drive gear, and the flywheel don't mesh correctly.
