Chevrolet Repair: 1999 Camaro, throttle position sensor, chevrolet camaro

Question
We have spent over $2000 on trying to fix our car. We are wanting to get it fixed cheap or do it ourselves. My dad works on cars but has no idea what is wrong with it.
We own a 1999 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible 6 cyl.
Here is our problem:
On occassion it will just turn off, mostly when it gets hot outside and has been sitting in traffic for sometime. Other times when you press the gas it will not go but when you let off it goes. We also now have a humming sound that was not there before. We are wondering if this could be the fuel pump? We have had several friends listen and drive it to see what they think. We have been told it could be vapor locking or need a new fuel filter. We are going to replace the fuel filter this weekend, and try to see if when it stalls if you unscrew the gas cap it will lets out air. But we are at our wits end with this car. Could you please give me your opinion? I am tired of paying our mechanic to drive it on his errands and still get it back broken.

Answer
Hello Heather,
The humming is probably the fuel pump, but is probably also normal.
I would want to check the fuel pressure with the engine running.
The stumble you describe makes me think it might be the throttle position sensor, since you open the air throttle plate mechanically when you press the gas, but if the throttle position sensor isn't sending the correct signal, the fuel will not be injected properly.
But the pressure needs to be correct also.
The TPS, or throttle position sensor can be tested with a good ohm meter, or with a scan tool.
