Chevrolet Repair: 1993 Chevy Astro van, chevy astro van, electric fuel pump

Question
My van has about 200,000 miles on it.  I had replaced a list of items that include: plugs & wirers, coil, distributor cap, rotor button, fuel pump, filter screen in fuel tank, in-line-fuel-filter,and throttel-body-injector.  My van hesitates when you accelerate or change speeds (like it is not getting fuel). Also when you make frequent short stops (like to go in to a store for 10 minutes or so) it dose not want to crank back, you have to hold down the accelorator to crank it. After the carborator leaves off then you can drive off if you try to pull away before it leavels off it will go dead again. Some times it really had to get it to crank again.  If you turn off the engine and do not try to crank it back for a couple of hours it dose not do this.  Do you know what might be causing this problem?

Answer
What you need to determine when this fault occurs is if you are losing spark to the spark plugs or fuel to the fuel injectors.

Once we know WHICH fault you have then w can perform some diagnostics.

The most common faults when this problem occurs, BUT NOT NECESSARILY, is that you either have an electrical spark lose to the spark plugs caused by the PICKUP COIL within the distributor, OR a faulty FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR, Or a faulty CRANKSHAFT SENSOR, Or a faulty intermittent operation of the electric FUEL PUMP in the fuel tank.

Fuel pump test:

1. Get yourself a helper.

2. remove the gas cap.

3. have one person listen in the gas tank at the gas cap opening.

4. have the other person turn the ignition switch to the ON position ONLY so as the dash lights come on. Do NOT attempt to start the engine.

5. As soon as the ignition key is turned to the ON position, The person at the gas tank should hear the fuel pump run for TWO SECONDS and then it should STOP.

6. Does it ?.

If you do NOT hear it run, in most cases the fault is the fuel pump.
