Chevrolet Repair: trouble starting, chevy astro van, vacuum leaks

Question
I have a 1996 Chevy Astro Van that is hard to start.  I have changed the fuel filter and have checked the fuel pump and it is good too.  It will start but acts like it isn't getting any gas, what could be causing this and what can I do to fix this problem?

Answer
Hello Amie,
You say the fuel pump is good, but if you haven't checked it with a gauge, you can't tell.
It needs to hold 11 to 13 PSI while running.
You can probably borrow a tester from a parts house.
If you have good pressure, is there a chance you have water in the tank? Like the last fillup may have water in it.
Remove one end of the filter, and draw about a pint of gas in a clean quart jar, and let it sit for just a little while to see if a slug of water forms in the bottom of the jar.

Vacuum leaks and just tune up, like plugs and wires are also possibilities.

If the EGR valve sticks open, it is just like a huge vacuum leak.
