Chevrolet Repair: 1991 Astro AWD Front axle/bearing rebuild, bearing press, autohelp

Question
I have access to a well-equipped hydraulic bearing press and an experienced transmission rebuilder to operate it. I'm confident we can do this properly if we can find out what parts to buy.

Question -
My 91's streetside front axle bearing (between the CV and the break disk, includes ABS stuff) is obviously deceased. Lots of wobble & scraping. This vehicle has about 170,000 Mi.

Parts sites show replacement assemblies for $200 and more but no bearings. Is it possible to replace just the bearings in the assembly? Where can I find the parts? Is it necessary to do both sides together?

Answer -
The reason that they only sell the complete HUB and BEARING as an assembly is that the bearing is hydraulically pressed into the hub and most people do not have the press.

I STRONGLY recommend buying the complete assembly due to the high mileage of the vehicle.

Answer
IF you can find the bearing you can try it. With this kind of mileage I would NOT be surprised if the bearing has spun inside of the hub and you won't get the new bearing to press in TIGHT enough.

It's up to you, But if it were my vehicle, I would not take the chance.
