Chevrolet Repair: replace the rack and pinion in a Chevy Cavalier, oldsmobile alero, chevy cavalier

Question
The rack and pinion in my Cavalier 2000 is leaking.  I bought a used one from a junk yard.  I am trying to get the old one out.  So far I disconnected the tie rods ends and some screw from the rack and pinion.  Any advice on what to do next? precautions I should observe?  Should I get a remanufactired rack and pinion or the one from the junk yard is OK?

Many thanks.

Answer
Your chances of the JUNK YARD rack and pinion leaking are VERY HIGH. You have no idea how long the unit has sat in the yard and all the seals are most likely hardened from non-use and will in NMOST cases LEAK.

Buy a new or rebuilt racka nd save yourself the headaches.

I have pictures and procedures of how to remove the rack and pinion from a 1999 Pontiac Grand Am and an Oldsmobile Alero that should be almost identical to your vehicle and I can provide them to you.
