Chevrolet Repair: How to change a flexplate, motorhome chassis, flex plate

Question
Hi Van.  Have a 1983 6.2 diesel 1 ton van front end with a Jayco motorhome chassis on it.
Starter does the bling sound quite often and upon checking found some teeth ground down is several spots.  Just wondering if this is a DIY project.
If so, where would the best place be to buy the flexplate and anything in the way of instructions to make the job easier.
Appreciate any info you may have.
Thanks,   Don

Answer
Hi Don,
The transmission must be removed to replace the flex plate, so if you have what it takes for that, it could be done at home.
The tranny doesn't necessarily need to be removed clear to the ground, though, if there is room to move it rearward on a transmission jack and allow enough room to get in there and work. But that can be a pain doing it that way.

One point I would like to make, though, is unbolt the torque converter from the flex plate, slide it into the tranny, and remove it with the tranny, rather than pulling the tranny off of it. That way, the tranny pump tangs will be lined up, and the seal won't be damaged. Careful, though, as you don't want it sliding out while you work, and falling on you.

New starter would be a good idea with the new flex plate, or at least make sure yours is in good shape.
