Chevrolet Repair: malibu dies and restarts ----no code, chevy dealer, dash lights

Question
I have a 99 malibu that will sometimes just cut off as if the key is turned, but will start right back up.It seems to happen more before it warms up completely.Chevy dealer kept car for couple of days to recreate problem, but it shows no code and appears normal after dying. They tell me it could be fuel pump or ignition problem(both costly to fix).but are not positive what the problem is.I hate to put anew pump in and find out I didn't need it.  THANKS for any ideas----from Bigfred

Answer
When the fault occurs AFTER it stalls out and won't start, Spray some starting fluid in the intake manifold and see if the engine will run. If it does this tells you pretty much that you have a fuel problem and perform this fuel pump test:

1. Get yourself a helper.

2. remove the gas cap.

3. have one person listen in the gas tank at the gas cap opening.

4. have the other person turn the ignition switch to the ON position ONLY so as the dash lights come on. Do NOT attempt to start the engine.

5. As soon as the ignition key is turned to the ON position, The person at the gas tank should hear the fuel pump run for TWO SECONDS and then it should STOP.

6. Does it ?.

If you do NOT hear it run, in most cases the fault is the fuel pump.
