what kind of engine damage would be done from sugar in gas tank and what steps should be taken to repair if possible?

Hello David,
I have heard stories ranging from absolutely nothing, to engine lockup.
But I don't have any first hand experience.
A man I work with owns a car that his daughter had away at college. Someone put sugar in the tank, and he got a complete overhaul. Said the sugar candied inside, and caused things to stick.

I would sure empty the tank and flush it out with lots of hot water if it were mine.
