Chevrolet Repair: 1987 Chev Astro Van, head gaskets, intake valves

Question
I am replacing the head gaskets on my 1987 Astro van with the 4.3 V-6 and don't know how to adjust the valves.  Do I do it with the engine running or not?

Answer
Valves are adjusted with engine OFF.

With the engine at the # 1 firing position timing mark showing at "O" at the pointer adjust exhaust valves #1, #5  #6 and intake valves #1, #2, #3 to zero lash and then turn the rocker arm nut ONE additional turn tighter.

When finished with above:

Turn engine over by hand until you are at the #4 firing position timing mark showing at "O" at the pointer and adjust exhaust valves #2,#3,#4 and intake valves #4,#5,#6 to zero lash and then turn the rocker arm nut ONE additional turn tighter.

For safety, When you are completly finished turn the engine over several timse BY HAND to make sure engine turns smoothly BEFORE starting engine.
