Chevrolet Repair: back-up light, chevy monte carlo, auto parts store

my vehicle is a 1974 chevy monte carlo sports coupe with automatic transmission,gearshift on the console between the 2 bucket seats.74000 miles.my problem: the back-up light comes on (normal brightness) when i shift to reverse but it doesn't
stay on.is there an adjustment that will handle this and if so where is it located?

OK, Now your making me feel OLD.  

QUESTION: what transmission is in the vehicle ?. a 350, 400 or what ?.

I am not positive as to where the BACKUP LIGHT SWITCH is located on your vehicle.

Some are mounted in the console where the gear shift lever is located. Some are located on the side of the transmission.

I would suggest that you go to any local auto parts store and purchase a new one and then contact me and describe what it loks like and then I can tell you where it goes.

QUESTION: What mechanical work or ANY kind of work has been performed on the vehicle recently ?. As most problems that occur after a recent repair was made can be traced back to the area of where the repair was made as a wire connection may have been knocked loose and or was knocked loose just enough to cause an intermittent connection. Look around in the area where work was performed.
