I have a 1983 g10 chevy van 4.1l 250 straight six. After a few minutes exhaust manifold starts glowing red. Spark plugs sooty black and engine oil smells like gasoline. Replaced carburetor and catalytic converter, still same problem. I am the original owner, truck has always ran great till now. Would appreciate any input.

Thanks,

Gary

If the vehicle is computer controlled is 80% of this type of symptoms, the computer (ECM) has failed internally and needs to be replaced.

Vehicle is not computer controlled.

Answer
OK, I just wanted to be SURE that it was NOT computer controlled.

You need to perform a cylinder leakage test on all of the cylinders as this will determine a leak in the head gasket(s), a possible cracked head(s) or a cracked engine block.

Glowing exhaust manifolds are usually a sign of a severe inbalance in the air/fuel ratio being delivered into the combustion chambers.

Could also be a mechanical or static (distributor) timing problem with the engine.

An exhaust restriction such as a plugged muffler and or debris from the old catalytic converter has come loose and has the exhaust system restricted.

Did you perform a vacuum back pressure test and or a back pressure test on the exhaust system ?.

Without actually having access to the vehicle, There are numerous possibilities.

Did you run a compression and cylinder leakage test on all the cylinders ?.
