Chevrolet Repair: My 95 S10 had a radiator leak...., radiator leak, radiator shop

Question
My 95 S10 had a radiator leak. The radiator shop where I bought a new radiator said the leak was caused by electrolysis and the new radiator would develop leaks pretty quickly if I didn't find the cause of the electrolysis and fix it. Can you help me with this problem? Thanks.

Keith

Answer
Electrolysis is caused by incompatability of 2 different types of metal of which numerous types of metal are used on the vehicles cooling system.

1. completlyFLUSH out the cooling system several times using a flushing agent recommended by the vehicles manufacturer.

2. Use the recommended brand of engine coolant of which the manufacturer of the vehicle recommends.

3. there are additives that can be used to resolve this problem of which are also recommended by the vehicles manufacturer.

In most cases, Either the WRONG type of engine coolant was used and or a different brand was added to the cooling system of which the manufacturer does NOT recommend and a buildup of residue has built up within the cooling system of which the flushing, correct coolant and additive will correct the problem.

I do NOT have much faith in your radiator repair facility as they should KNOW this solution.

NOTE: A CHEAP aftermarket radiator can also ADD to the electrolysis problem of which is why i ONLY recommend a radiator that is either recommended, bought thru a GM dealer or has a warranted guarantee that states that the radiator is recommended and approved by the vehicles manufacturer.

CHEAP radiators can cause numerous problems.

Is your NEW radiator warranted as being approved for use in your vehicle by the vehicles manufacturer and do you have this in WRITING ?. If NOT, I would WORRY.

I NEVER EVER recommend aftermarket parts of any kind what-so-ever unless they are recommended and or approved by the vehicles manufacturer as being as good or better than the original part that came with the vehicle when it was built.

Personally, 10 years out of the original radiator is about right. just make sure of all of the above and aviod aftermarket parts.
