Chevrolet Repair: Steering Column Conversion, clutch pedal, torque converter

Question
I have a 1980 Chevy.  It currently has a 3 speed manual transmission with the shifter located on the steering column.  I am interested in converting it to automatic.  Would I only need to remove the current column and replace it with the new automatic column?  Or can I just change the transmission?  If changed to automatic.  Would I only need to change the column?  Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Your going to need to change a TON of things.

1. The entire steering column.

2. Replace ALL the linkages from the column down to the transmission.

3. Replace the transmission.

4. install the transmission THROTTLE CABLE up to the carburator.

5. Most likely change the driveshaft from the transmission to the rear differential.

6. Install a different cross member to accomodate the automatic transmission.

7. Rewire the backup light switch.

8. Install a torque converter along with the transmission.

9. Remove the clutch pedal from the vehicle and the linkages.

10. Replace the flywheel.

11. Replace the dash cluster assembly in order to get the cluster showing the letters indicating:

P (park)
R (reverse)
N (neutral)
D (drive)
2 (second gear)
1 (first gear)

IF your transmission is computer controlled and your vehicle has a computer you will have MAJOR problems in rewiring the transmission in order to get the over drive to work unless you go with a non-computerized transmission.

Your in for alot of work and many hours of time and money.
