Chevrolet Repair: Power Steering, derek lawrence, power steering fluid

Question
I just noticed that my power steering fluid smells burnt, exactly the same as when a transmission has been slipping. The front seal is weeping. I have recently purchased this vehicle and it has 250k KM's on it. It is a 1996 Suburban K1500 4X4. The steering is still ok, does the pump have to be replaced now before the box gets contaminated from the pump? I have never replaced a pump before so why now?

Thanks
Derek Lawrence

Answer
Hi Derek, The fluid can get this smell just from age. You don't need to replace the pump as it is fine. I would just flush out the fluid in the pump. There are some shops that have a machine that does a great job flushing the power steering system.

Hope this helps
