Chevrolet Repair: 2002 chevy fuel pump replacement, soapy water, fuel pump

Question
I have a 2002 K1500 4.8 litre V8 silverado.  The fuel filter clogged and burned the fuel pump up.  Is this something I can do myself?  The dealershipis trying to charge me $1100.  Thanks for the help.

Answer
Hello J,
I don't know what your experience level is, but I could do the job in my driveway, and I would do it for you for about three to four hundred...including parts, and clean out the tank.
But before jumping to the conclusion that the pump is shot, i would remove the filter and see for sure.
For a 2002 to have plugged so bad, and run long enough to ruin the pump, you must have gotten a tank full of terrible stuff. You must avoid fueling at that station again.

But to do it yourself, either the tank needs to be removed, or the bed needs to be moved enough to gain access.
It is often easier to loosen the rear bed mount bolts, and remove the rest of the bed mount bolts, and lift and block up the front of the bed.
But if your tank has that much crud in it, I would drop the tank and get it cleaned out.
Hot soapy water will usually do.

Good luck,
Van
