Chevrolet Repair: Wheel Bearing??, front wheel bearings, front wheel bearing

Question
Mark
I have a 1999 S-10 Blazer 4x4 w/33k miles on it.  There is a roaring/whining noise that sounds like it is coming from the right front.  When I am at low speed, around 35mph and cut the steering wheel to the left it becomes much louder.  It defiantly changes when I cut the steering wheel.  Is it the front wheel bearing?  What is involved in replacing the front wheel bearings?  Is it a complete hub assembly that has to be replaced or can the actual bearings be replaced.  What other troubleshooting can I do to determine my problem?  I have ruled out tires as being the problem.
Thanks
Gordon Vickers

Answer
Hi Gordon, The wheel bearings go bad often on these trucks. They come as a complete hub/bearing assembly. To replace them you need to have a way to tighten the axle nut to 103lbs ft. The tools needed are a 18mm wrench to remove the brakes. A 18mm socket to remove the wheel bearing bolts and a 36mm socket to remove the axle nut.

Hope this helps you out
