Chevrolet Repair: no start, fuel pressure regulator, jumper wires

Question
1993 g20 conversion 5.7L tbi, 130,000 mi. ran like a vette since i replaced fuel filter in august, yesterday, hard 2 start, left the house about 5 miles and she died 'round a right turn. towed her home, sometimes fuel from injectors, rarely ever a healthy spray pattern, but if i pour fuel down the throttle plates, she runs fine, just not on her own. i hear relay, lots of fuel pump sound, she won't start, cranks like crazy. no test valve for fuel pump pressure, thinking of fabricating a line off filter to pressure test, NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. please help

Answer
Hi Joe,
There is an adapter for the fuel pressure test, but it costs about 45 dollars, and goes in place of the filter.
I don't like that, because if you are having fuel problems anyway, that forces you to operate it without a filter, and I think that is a bad idea. I like your thought of fabricating a "T" from a filter, or just connect to the line from the tank.
If the pump is running, the fuse, relay, etc are probably fine.
I will tell you about a similar situation I had.
Pump seemed fine, but I was getting 6 PSI. The throttle body system needs a full 13 to 14 PSI.
I pulled the tank, and removed the pump, but decided to see what it would do in a bucket of diesel fuel. Didn't want to use an open bucket of gasoline while using jumper wires etc.
Pump ran fine, 6 PSI, and a large spray of diesel fuel coming from a little split in the rubber hose connecting the pump to the tank unit line.
I replaced that little hose with some fuel hose, and the pressure jumped right up to 14.
Stuck that pump back in there, about two years ago, and it's been fine ever since.
You should get a nice healthy spray from those injectors, so I think you might have the same problem I did.
Another remote possibility is the fuel pressure regulator allowing full flow back to the tank.
