Chevrolet Repair: Power Steering Noise, power steering pump, chevy astro

Question
Hi autohelp!
Since it has turned cold, down in the lower 30s, I hear a funny whinning-buzzing noise when I first start my 89 Chevy Astro. It gets louder when I turn the wheel back and forth and does sound as if it is coming from the power steering unit area. It has done this for the last two winters or so. It gets better and eventually goes away after around 10 minutes or so of warm up. Doesn't occur at all when temps. are in the upper 30s or above.
If this is a power steering problem, can I correct it with additives, ajustment, etc., or do I need to have it replaced or repaired?

Thank you very much,

Mike Eidson

Answer
No miracles-in-a-can will make a permannet improvement. In most cases the problem is within the POWER STEERING PUMP unless you have a power steering LEAK of anykind. Any kind of a LEAK will allow AIR into the power steering system and will cause air bubbles of which will cause a whine.
