Chevrolet Repair: Funky Grand Am transmission problem., auto tranny, vacuum line

Question
I have a good friend who owns a 90 model Grand Am with the 2.3L Quad4 engine w/ auto tranny. For some oddball reason it won't shift on it's own.He sais it will sporadically like it has it's mood swings. Most of the time he has to shift it by hand. We changed the filter/fluid last weekend, but that didn't help. I told him to check the vacuum line for cracks or blockage too. Is there something else that could be creating this problem?

Depending upon the TYPE of transmission that is in the vehicle depends upon what the problem can be. Approximately how many wires do you see going into the transmission ?.

If you can e-mail several pictures of the transmission and the electrical wire harnesses going into it this would be a BIG help in determing which model you have and for me to give you accurate test procedures.
