my question is ......How would one find out if a 88 chev surburban 3/4 C 20 5.7L has a posi-traction or a sliplock? Can yoy tell by the bolt system or is there a #?

Hi Ron,
There is a number, and it is easier than you think.
In the glove compartment, there is a tag, or decal, with about 65 three digit codes. Those are called RPO codes, or Regular Production Options. It is a list of just about everything that was installed on the vehicle during assembly.

Engine codes will usually be in the "L's", like L19=7.4L V8,
Transmission codes usually in the "M's", like MX2= 350THM.
Axle gears are usually "G's", like G80=positrac.
You could have multiple "G's", one for positrac, and one for the ratio.

If for some reason you can't find them on those pages, give me a list of all the "G's"...I have a little book covering that age range.
