Chevrolet Repair: front differoal, pinion bearings, drive shaft

Question
Yes I have a 1999 1500 4X4 an when I put it in 4wd it makes a loud growling noise an in 2wd but not as bad an I can take the front driveshaft out an it want make the noise unless i hit the 4wd button even with the driveshaft out so what could it be . thanks for the help

Answer
Hi Lee, This sounds like your front differential pinion bearings are bad. I have done a few of these on trucks from 1998 to 2001. The noise is gone with the drive shaft out because now the pinion gear is not turning. When you put it in 4wd the pinion gear is turning and now making the noise. You to have the bearings in the front diff replaced.
