Chevrolet Repair: engine/not turning, distributor shaft, correct sequence

i took out all the spark plugs and performed a compression test on all cylinders.  it's making 160 on all cylinders.  i also changed the spark plugs and the wires.  what about the distributor shaft? that's probably the only thing i have not replaced.  maybe not sparking in correct sequence. what does the shaft do anyway?

I don't have the rest of your previous question to look at.
Have you checked to see if there is spark at the plug wires?
The distributor shaft turns the rotor, and also drives the ignition pulse pickup piece on some engines.
If it is turning, it is probably ok, although it must be properly timed.
