Chevrolet Repair: 2000 S-10 Engine Problems, cam shaft, gm vehicles

Question
I hope you can answer this:

My truck, a 2000 Chevrolet S-10 Xtreme, just decided not to start one day.  Basically, the battery is fine - fully charged - and the truck will start if I use starter fluid in the breather.

I've heard things like: fuel filter, fuel pump, PCV valve, cam shaft senson, fuel injector senson, etc.  I know that the engine itself has about 40,000 miles on it and that it's in very good condition.  The latest idea I've heard is that GM vehicles are notorious for something under the distributor cap (I don't know what it's called) to stop working, causing the engine to turn over but not start.  Does this sound familiar?  Any ideas?  Thanks for all the help.

Answer
Hi Dustin,
First check the fuel pump fuse.
Then listen back near the fuel tank when the ignition switch is turned to run. Don't try to start it, just turn the key to run. You should hear a humm from the tank for about three seconds.
If you don't hear it, lay down and reacu under the gas tank, and have someone turn the key to run, and then smack the bottom of the tank to see if you can make it humm.
The humming is the fuel pump, and if it doesn't run, the engine won't run.
If smacking it makes it run, a new pump is in your future.
